Sicily
Sicily became part of Italy during the unification of 1861 and was given special status as an autonomous region in 1946. Sicily has always been sought after due to its geographical strategic advantage. It is located halfway between Gibraltar and the Suez Canal. It is separated from the mainland by the Strait of Messina.
Its many inhabitants over the years have given this region a unique aesthetic. Sicily has seen the rise and fall of numerous groups vying for control including: Greek, Carthaginians, Romans, Vandals, Ostrogoths, Byzantines, Arabs, and Normans to name a few! :)
As the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily offers a mix of internationally influenced architecture, world class monuments, and intriguing history! Some places of note include the Palermo Cathedral, Palazzo dei Normanni, Teatro Massimo, and the Museo Archeologico Regionale. My favorite Spiaggia Sabbie Nere, a beautiful beach where black volcanic sand is what your feet touch!
This autonomous region offers such amazing gastronomic delights! Get your taste buds ready for our next menu!
